Straight Talk May Slow Your Data Down

I heard some reports that Straight Talk slows down your data sometime after just a month of service. I have also heard that they slow down data and then speed it back up every few weeks. I have experienced this to and it seems that they are still giving you the same amount of data. The catch is that instead of giving you say 3-4 mbs download they change it to 0.50 mbs download and move the faster speeds to upload. I noticed when I was getting very slow speeds I was getting .50 down and 5 up. I don’t know how they do this but next time your data slows down on Straight Talk do a Speedtest and check the upload speeds.

If Straight Talk slows your data speeds down then just a quick call to customer service usually fixes it (for a little while).

Peek killing off its email and Twitter devices

Peek is finally killing off their email and Twitter devices after many years of service. Peek was a handheld that basically got your emails for you using Tmobile’s service. You paid so much a month for it to do this for you. There was also a similar handheld that had access to Twitter for those that can’t be without Twitter. This device is going away for obvious reasons. Almost everyone has a smartphone or a dumbphone that has access to these services. So, why would you need a device like this. Oh and one more thing, those who paid for “lifelong service” on the device for $299… well that’s ending too. Everyone rather they paid the $19.95 a month or for livelong service the service is ending. Here is a statement from the company.

“Unfortunately we cannot maintain the network forever for a few users, so that end time has come. The networks are changing standards, protocols etc and the old units are now end of life. We have lots going with rapid adoption of our software by phone brands around the world, so Peek is flat out building for a number of platforms that our OEM customers are deploying like Android and Mediatek. We are not offering a Peek-made device to replace these old ones.”

AT&T Changing Data Plans Again

AT&T is once again changing its data plans on its smartphones. This time they are going to give you a higher monthly allotment but it will be a bit higher in price. The following is the new data plans that will take place this Sunday:

  • 300MB data for $20

  • 3GB for $30

  • 5GB for $50 (which will include mobile hotspot access)

If you are still on any of the older plans including Unlimited data you are still grandfathered in. What do you think about the change?

Archos Arnova 7″ Tablet for $99 is coming soon!

A new tablet is coming in the form of a $99 device named the Archos Arnova 7″. Now, I’ve had a $99 dollar tablet before namely one from CVS/pharmacy and it really was bad. The buttons on the tablet messed up the first day and it couldn’t even play Angry birds. :( However, this manufactuer on this one is Archos. Which is known for making great tablets and with this $99 tablet I’d hope it’d be the same great quality. But for $99 some of the quality must have had to be downgraded to warrant the price, right? Well, yesterday Netflix released their first application for Android that allowed you to stream movies and shows from their server. However, only certain phones were supported: HTC Incredible (Android 2.2), HTC Nexus One (Android 2.2 and 2.3), HTC Evo 4G (Android 2.2), HTC G2 (Android 2.2) and finally Samsung Nexus S (2.3). If you didn’t have one of those phones well than you were out of luck. Until now…

So, if you don’t have one of those phones the first thing I would do is download the Netflix app here. Then launch it from your phone and just see how the Netflix app will react to your phone.

If you cannot get it to work then here are some ways of making your phone launch and play Netflix videos. It doesn’t work for everyone. Oh, and your phones must be rooted!

————-
THE FOLLOWING IS FROM REDDIT.COM
0) Root is required. Make a Nandroid backup! (I accidentally deleted by build.prop file and bootlooped my phone)
1) Download ES File Explorer (Or any other root file editor)
2) In ES File Explorer, go into Setting > Root Settings and enable both check boxes
3) Navigate to /system/ and copy/paste build.prop to /sdcard/ (just in case)
4) Open & edit /system/build.prop
5) Change the following lines to make your phone think it is a HTC G2:
ro.product.model=HTC Vision
ro.product.manufacturer=HTC
OR
ro.product.model=Nexus S
ro.product.manufacturer=samsung
6) Reboot the phone
7) Install the netflix apk (if you haven’t already)
8) Enjoy

Hopefully, it works for you so just give it a try! I’m using an old Cliq XT from Tmobile running the CyanogenMod Android 2.3 and its also over-clocked. However, I can only get audio to work with no video. I also heard that Android 2.3 on Droid X makes Netflix work as well.
